The Neighborhood
rooklyn Law School is in the enviable position of being located in exactly the right place. Situated at the crossroads of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, the Brooklyn Civic Center, and Downtown Brooklyn, the Law School is in the heart of a distinctive legal, cultural, historical and aesthetically-pleasing neighborhood.
As if that weren't enough, our location offers easy access to Manhattan: the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge is only blocks away; and if you don't feel like walking, driving or taking a taxi, Brooklyn Law School is situated at the heart of a major public transportation hub.
Brooklyn Heights is one of the most graceful and hospitable neighborhoods in all of New York City. Lovingly restored townhouses, brownstone mansions, and carriage houses have lined the streets since the mid-1800s. Our neighborhood is greener and brighter than almost any in Manhattan – more grass, more leafy trees, and more sunshine. Brooklyn is also home to the acclaimed Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Botanic Gardens, Prospect Park, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. You'll also find some terrific antique shopping, clothing boutiques, and highly acclaimed restaurants. These surroundings make life pleasurable for residents and students, many of whom live in neighborhood student housing.
From Classroom to Courtroom
Brooklyn Law School has taken advantage of its proximity to
almost every type of court and government agency to create its own law campus. In buildings that are steps away from the Law School, students participate in a wide range of externships that include:
- United States Attorney's Office
- New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division
- State and city courts, including civil, supreme, family, and surrogate courts
- Kings County District Attorney
- Administrative agencies
- Legal Aid Society
- City, state and federal government offices
Through our in-house clinics, students are immersed in legal problem-solving-counseling clients, negotiating claims, conducting discovery proceedings, drafting pleadings, memoranda and briefs, and even arguing cases in both state and federal trial and appellate courts. Walking from classroom to courtroom, our students learn about becoming lawyers, even as they act as lawyers. It is this educational experience, coupled with the unique advantages of the city, that make Brooklyn such a rare and wonderful community in which to study, work, and live.
