Studying and Practicing Law in the New Century
n 1902, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. observed that life in the 20th century was a web of tangled relations that required sorting out from time to time. That important job, he said, had been assigned to lawyers. If Holmes thought life in the 20th century was complex, what would he say about life in the 21st century?
Undoubtedly he would agree that to sort out today's tangled relations, something more than mere knowledge of legal rules is required. At Brooklyn Law School this something more includes the ability to unravel and solve magnificently complex problems, the ability to pay meticulous attention to detail and nuance of meaning, and the ability to think creatively, constructively and critically indeed, to think around corners that others can't even see. Our academic program is designed to nurture these skills.
The Case for Brooklyn Law School
It is as fundamental as the people, the programs,
and the place.
Faculty: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
A key element of a superior education is contact with powerful and stimulating minds minds that are engaged in research, shaping policy, that are making law. Our faculty includes world-renowned authorities in many fields evidence, products liability, intellectual property, international business, human rights, women's rights, criminal, commercial, constitutional, and health law.
Because they write books and articles, are actively involved in legislative policy making, and are called upon by courts to help resolve complex cases, they bring to the classroom and impart to their students something more special than mere textbook knowledge. They bring the outside in. As dedicated as they are to shaping law in the outside world, our professors are even more dedicated to teaching law inside the classroom. They are accessible in a way that few faculties are.
