Dennis J. Block ’67 has been named Dealmaker of the Year by American Lawyer for the third time in his impressive career. Block, a senior partner at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and a household name in the world of mergers and acquisitions, offers his expertise as an Adjunct Professor at the Law School, where he teaches advanced corporate law and the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law bears his name in recognition of his distinguished work as an international business lawyer.

This time around, American Lawyer recognized Block for his work as lead counsel to Pfizer in the acquisition of Wyeth, the largest M&A transaction of 2009. The $68 billion cash and stock transaction was viewed by financial experts as a welcome harbinger of renewed financial market stability, and was instrumental in forming one of the most diversified players in the global health care sector to date.

“Dennis is one of the country’s leading mergers and acquisitions attorneys,” said Christopher White, Chairman of the firm, in a recent press release. “It is a significant accomplishment that he is a three-time recipient of this honor.”

Block offers a wealth of real-world knowledge to his students, who have great respect for his experience and are eager to learn from him as they launch their own careers. “His support underscores the Center’s important work of studying and shaping international business law and policy, and encourages the talented students, practitioners, and scholars associated with it,” noted Dean Joan G. Wexler.

Block has handled high-profile M&A deals, hostile and friendly, for years, with transactions and representations including the Bear Sterns Companies Inc. acquisition by JPMorgan Chase, the Proctor & Gamble acquisition of The Gillette Company, and Pfizer Inc.’s sale of its Consumer Business to Johnson & Johnson, among many others. He is a frequent contributor to legal publications and journals, has served on the Committee on Corporate Laws of the Section of Business Law of the American Bar Association, and has been consistently recognized as a top-tier corporate and M&A lawyer by Chambers Global as well as included in “Best Lawyers in America.”
