04.13.10 Sex and the Law Week
    Sex and Law Week

The BLS National Lawyers Guild (NLG) and Outlaws are hosting a series of events for Sex and the Law Week, a weeklong exploration of sexuality through a legal lens.

    Scheduled events:
"Loving More than One Person? Where the Law Stands on Polyamory and Polgamy"
    Tuesday, April 13
    1:00 - 2:00 pm
    250 Joralemon Street, Room 603

While the fight for marriage equality has focused on possibilities for same sex marriage, it hasn't asked the question of what happens when more than two people want to form a relationship together. The television show, "Big Love" has brought the world of polygamy into the modern imagination. Come learn how we can understand these relationships within the context of the law. Professor William Araiza and Professor Nelson Tebbe will lead a discussion on polyamorous and polygamous legal issues including polygamous interests in the fight for marriage equality. Lunch will be served.

"Teen Sexting: The Problematic Prosecution of Teens under Child Pornography Laws"
    Wednesday, April 14
    1:00 - 2:00 pm
    Subotnick Center
    250 Joralemon Street, 11th Floor

Teens are being prosecuted for sexting under child pornography statutes all over the country, landing many of them on sex offender lists and with lengthy prison sentences. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld a ruling against a PA district attorney who sought to charge five young women with child pornography for taking and texting pictures of themselves. Statutory proposals in many states, including NY, seek to change the law in order to address teen sexting without resorting to child pornography statutes. Come hear from NYCLU staff attorney Katharine Bodde and Day One NY staff attorney Ian Bysshe Harris about how the law currently addresses teen sexting and proposals for reform. Lunch will be served.

"Sex and the Law Week Presents: En El Fuego"
    Thursday, April 15
    1:00 - 2:00 pm
    250 Joralemon Street, Room 605

"En El Fuego" is a film about how individuals have responded to the severe atmosphere of transphobia in Peru's conservative society. Transphobia is a problem around the world, but even more so in a conservative and religious city like Lima, Peru, where transgender citizens are not protected under the law. "En El Fuego" (or "In the Fire") provides these individuals with the rare opportunity to open up their lives and their hearts to viewers by discussing discrimination, abuse, hopes and dreams in a society that has openly turned its back on them. Lunch will be served.
