On November 12, 2010, Brooklyn Law School will present distinguished Alumni of the Year Awards to Hon. Dorothy Eisenberg ’50, Howard Finkelstein ’59 and David Barse ’87. The three will be recognized at the Annual Alumni Association Luncheon at the Plaza Hotel in New York, where Interim Dean Michael Gerber and Alumni Association President Scott Hazan ’73 will present the 2010 Awards to this year’s honorees.
Judge Dorothy Eisenberg is a United States Bankruptcy Court Judge in the Eastern District of New York. Prior to becoming a bankruptcy judge in 1989, she was a partner at the Garden City, New York firm of Shaw, Licitra, Eisenberg, Esernio & Schwartz, P.C., and its first female partner. She was also a member of the Committee on Character and Fitness, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, and a Panel Trustee for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. She is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and serves as a member of the Advisory Committee for the New York State and Federal Judicial Council. She is also a member of Brooklyn Law School’s Barry L. Zaretsky Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Roundtable Steering Committee.
Howard S. Finkelstein founded Finkelstein & Partners just two years after graduating from Brooklyn Law School in 1959. His firm, which specializes in personal injury litigation, is now a thriving network of offices in New York and New Jersey. Finkelstein has served as President of the Greater Newburgh Bar Association and as President of the Orange County Bar Association, and he has held a number of leading roles in a variety of other bar associations. A loyal supporter of Brooklyn Law School, Finkelstein has created two scholarships, the Class of 1959 Scholarship and the Howard S. Finkelstein Scholarship, as well as helping to create a scholarship in memory of fellow BLS alumnus Ronald Jacobson ’59.
David M. Barse is the Chief Executive Officer of Third Avenue Management LLC and a member of the Brooklyn Law School Board of Trustees. He has been a member of the World Economic Forum since 2008, and he is a frequent speaker on economic issues. He is a board member of the Covanta Holdings Corporation and the City Parks Foundation. Barse has been a Dean’s Roundtable Luncheon speaker at the Law School and is a member of the Barry L. Zaretsky Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Roundtable Steering Committee. He has been a generous supporter of the Law School, endowing the David M. Barse Chair currently held by Professor Edward Janger, and the Barse Family Scholarship in memory of his father, Lawrence Barse, a member of the Class of 1958.
