116th Commencement at BAM

Brooklyn Law School has announced that Errol Louis ‘05, Host of Inside City Hall on NY1 News, will be the commencement speaker at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 18.

Louis is also a political commentator for CNN, and the director of Urban Reporting at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. He is a columnist and editorial board member at the New York Daily News and served as the host of the Morning Show, a three-hour program on WWRL radio.

He received national attention during the 2016 presidential campaign for his lively and incisive commentary on CNN New Day and for his post-debate coverage. The Washington Post took notice in its story, "We know this is the 10,000th Democratic debate. But you should really tune in — for Errol Louis." The story included high praise from his colleagues in the media.

“Too many journalists pretend to be objective, as if they have no opinion about topics like war, peace, justice and other core issues,” Louis told the Washington Post. “Audiences know better, and can see right through the illusion. A much better goal is to be fair, which is what I try to be every day.”

He has been awarded numerous honors, including being named by New York Magazine as one of 10 New Yorkers making a difference "with energy, vision and independent thinking." In 2016, he was honored by Medgar Evers College Educational Foundation at its inaugural Pinnacle Awards and Scholarship Dinner, presented in recognition of his contribution to political awareness in the city. He also has been recognized as New York City’s best columnist and radio host by the Village Voice.

He has served as moderator for key, high-profile political debates, including New York City mayoral debates and the statewide debate for New York’s U.S. Senate contests in 2012 and 2016.

Louis has taught at the Pratt Institute, Hunter College, Long Island University, and New York University. He currently is the Director of Urban Reporting at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Louis is the co-editor of Deadline Artists (2011), and Deadline Artists: Scandals, Tragedies and Triumphs (2012), two anthologies of America’s best newspaper columns.

He attended Brooklyn Law School in the evening while working at The Daily News. In addition to his J.D., Louis holds a bachelor's in Government from Harvard University and a master's in Political Science from Yale.
