Service Day 2020

Welcome to Brooklyn Law School! Want to get to know your fellow students AND do important work for the community? On Friday, August 28th, Brooklyn Law School will be holding its annual Service Day. Sign up to volunteer with an organization serving vital needs in the New York Area. Given the ongoing pandemic, all Service Day activities will be conducted remotely. There are still many meaningful ways to give back!

This year’s activities will include:

Bailey Housethe nation’s first congregate residence for people living with AIDS. Write letters and notes and create drawings of encouragement for the residents to combat the social isolation that has resulted from the pandemic.

Dream Center NYCa neighborhood-based community and family support organization that provides basic food and hygiene needs. Choose from 2 possible Dream Center projects:

Needs-Based Resource Guides: Help produce resource guides for services throughout NYC, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, counseling services, or any other services you think people may need.

COVID-19 Legal Resource Guides: Conduct research and help create resource guides for clients on legal policies enacted or impacted due to the pandemic. Topics can include policies related to disability or unemployment benefits, immigration, rent, school loans and loan forgiveness plans, medical bills, or any others you think may be helpful.

Alliance for Safe Kidsan organization that promotes awareness of youth mental health and prevent substance use and abuse. Choose from 3 possible Alliance projects:

Flyer Creation: Use Canva or any software of your choice to produce informative and eye-catching handouts about substance abuse and mental health topics.

Cards for Seniors: Create inspirational cards and messages for seniors receiving lunch at a senior center to let them know they are being thought of and brighten their day.

Research and/or Review Mental Health/ Substance Abuse Resources: View available resource guides and search for new resources not included. You can also review resources listed in the guides and make sure the information provided (contact info, website, etc.) is correct.

Neighbor Networkan organization that helps match seniors with phone volunteers to regularly call them during the pandemic to help fight social isolation and connect them with needed resources. Requires a 45-minute virtual training that will take place at 11am on Friday, August 28th. You can either phone bank for the day to match seniors to volunteers OR, if you’ll be available longer term, be matched to a senior whom you will call twice a week for the duration of the pandemic.
