Susan Hazeldean

Biography

Susan Hazeldean was named the Associate Dean of Experiential Education effective July 1, 2023. She is also a Professor of Law and the founding director of the LGBTQ Advocacy Clinic at Brooklyn Law School.

Her teaching, scholarship, and law practice focus on family law, gender identity, sexual orientation, and civil rights. Hazeldean and her LGBT Advocacy Clinic students represent low-income LGBTQ+ people in a variety of legal matters including prisoners’ rights, family law, immigration, and anti-discrimination cases. Her scholarship has appeared in the Cornell Law Review, Harvard Civil Rights – Civil Liberties Law Review, Cardozo Law Review, U.C. Davis Law Review, Benders Immigration Review and the ABA Human Rights Magazine.

Prior to joining the Brooklyn faculty, Hazeldean was an Associate Clinical Professor directing the LGBT Clinic at Cornell Law School. She was previously a Robert M. Cover Clinical Teaching Fellow at Yale Law School. In 2020, she was awarded the AALS Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues Section Excellence in LGBTQ+ Inclusion Award. The National LGBT Bar Association gave her a Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40 Award in 2015. Before entering law teaching, Hazeldean directed the Peter Cicchino Youth Project at the Urban Justice Center in New York City, providing free legal representation to homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth. She received her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her J.D. from Yale Law School. Hazeldean is a former Arthur Liman Public Interest Law Fellow and a member of the New York bar.
