Art Law Seminar

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of art law. The class will study the ways in which the visual arts and the law collide, and how the law regulates the creation and distribution of art, as well as the cultural importance of art. Areas that will be considered include copyright and fair use, moral rights, restitution and cultural heritage law, authenticity, commercial art transactions, and the implications of new technologies, such as blockchain, non-fungible tokens, and artificial intelligence. Copyright Law or Introduction to Intellectual Property must be completed or taken concurrently. Grading is based on class participation (including class presentations), and a 10-page final paper that satisfies the Additional Upper-Class Writing Requirement.
