Media Law

This course examines selected topics of current interest in mass media law and policy, with particular attention to the ways in which the news and entertainment media affect American politics and culture. Topics will vary from year to year, but may include: media coverage of military activities and national security issues; distortion and bias in news coverage; the impact of the globalization and conglomeration of mass media companies; reform measures aimed at enhancing the media's contribution to the democratic process; laws relating to social media content; news coverage of crime and the criminal justice system; privacy and news coverage of celebrities; and the impact of the internet on the practice of journalism.

Grading and Method of Evaluation:
Letter grade with pass/fail option. Final Exam.
