Beyond Survival: Film Screening & Panel Discussion

About the Film

In 2019, after a decade-long fight, the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA) was enacted in New York State. Beyond Survival (Kashif Incubator, 2024) tells the story of this critical sentencing reform and the powerful leadership of currently and formerly incarcerated survivors in creating systemic change.

The film also highlights the current work of the Survivors Justice Project (SJP), an interdisciplinary collective of activists, lawyers, researchers, social workers, and students – many of whom are survivors of domestic violence and survivors of long-term incarceration. SJP launched in 2020 at Brooklyn Law School and focuses on the decarceration through domestic violence survivors by ensuring robust implementation and expansion of the DVSJA. Now a program of the Women & Justice Project, SJP works closely with the Criminal Defense & Advocacy Clinic, led by Brooklyn Law School Professor Kate Mogulescu. Clinic students have brought the first DVSJA cases in many counties across New York State and represented the four survivors who, in the film, share their experiences using the law.

Produced by the Women & Justice Project and Kashif Incubator, Beyond Survival is a celebration and a call to action.
