Sarah Capasso-Kosan ’18 Wins LGBT Bar Association Writing Competition

Sarah Capasso-Kosan ’18 won First Place in the Michael Greenberg Writing Competition at the National LGBT Bar Association Lavender Law Conference in San Francisco in August.

The award was established in memory of Greenberg, the former National LGBT Bar Association board member and Philadelphia attorney, who died from AIDS complications in 1996. The competition encourages law student scholarship on legal issues affecting LGBT people.

Capasso-Kosan’s paper, “Put Your Money Where Your Equality Is: A Proposal for the First National Equality Tax Credit Act,” proposes that private employers be required to establish health care benefits for spouses or domestic partners of LGBT employees, including transgender-specific health coverage. The Act (NETCA) also would require managers and owners of private housing and privately owned public housing to establish nondiscriminatory policies related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Employers and property owners would in turn be eligible for federal tax credits based on the cost of the benefits.
