Marty Singer '77 and Andrew Brettler '05 Named to Hollywood Reporter's 2019 Power Lawyer List; Allen Grubman '67 Named Legal Legend

04/05/2019

Hollywood Reporter has named Marty Singer ’77 and Andrew Brettler ’05 of Lavely Singer to its 13th annual Power Lawyers 2019 Top 100 Attorneys list. The magazine selected Allen Grubman ’67, senior partner, Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, as a Legal Legend.

Singer is regarded as the go-to lawyer for many of Hollywood’s biggest names and has been described by Vanity Fair as “the bane of studio chiefs and tabloid editors” and a “rabid defender of stars in trouble.” Singer recently represented Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, and his security chief, Gavin de Becker, when National Enquirer threatened to publish Bezos’s “sexts” to television anchor Lauren Sanchez.

“It means so much to me that I was recognized as one of The Hollywood Reporter’s 2019 Power Lawyers next to Marty,” said Brettler. “To be able to share that honor with him is very special. I’m forever grateful to Marty for his tutelage and guidance.”

The Singer-Brettler connection happened the old-fashioned way: networking. Brettler, who moved from New York to Los Angeles in 2008, reached out to Brooklyn Law School alumni in the area. Singer was the first to respond, and he treated Brettler to a Dodgers game. The two kept in touch, and Singer tried to pry Brettler away from Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett.

“I wasn’t necessarily looking to switch firms,” said Brettler. “But Marty was persistent. And his practice was exciting.”

Brettler agreed to meet with Singer’s partners, and he was offered the job. He was named a partner in 2014. The two work closely together on numerous matters and Brettler has his own Hollywood power player clients.

“Brooklyn Law School provided me with a great foundation and excellent research and analytical skills to create a career for me as an attorney,” said Singer. “Anyone who graduates from Brooklyn can use these skills to be successful in their career. “

The Hollywood Reporter also honored Grubman, along with 16 other attorneys, whose career achievements and contributions to the entertainment industry are “extraordinary” and “transcend the Power Lawyers list.” Grubman, who was honored with a Brooklyn Law School Alumni of the Year award in February 2018, retains the Hollywood Reporter accolade for life.
