Professor Julian Arato Named to Academic Council of Institute for Transnational Arbitration

Professor Julian Arato, Associate Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Dennis J. Block Center for International Business Law, has been appointed by The Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA) to its prestigious Academic Council. Members of the ITA Academic Council are top academic scholars in the field of international arbitration. They play a key role in ITA leadership, program design, publications, and educational videos. The council also has a leading role in organizing the annual ITA-ASIL Conference with the American Society of International Law in Washington, D.C. The new Academic Council members were appointed to a three-year term during the ITA Workshop and Annual Meeting in Plano, Texas, in June.

“I am beyond thrilled to join the ITA Academic Council and humbled by the extraordinary talent and expertise of my fellow appointees,” said Arato. “The Council does essential work in developing the international arbitration community. ITA events build bridges between top practitioners, scholars, and students, and really define the cutting edge of the field. It is such an honor to contribute to this important work.” Earlier this year, Arato was also elected to the Executive Council of American Society of International Law (ASIL). He will also co-chair ASIL’s Mid-Year Meeting, which will be held at Brooklyn Law School Nov. 7–9.

Pearsall, Partner, Chair of Public International Law, Jenner & Block LLP and also Adjunct Faculty of Georgetown Law, Washington, D.C.

ITA provides advanced professional education and networking through its programs, scholarly publications and membership activities for lawyers, arbitrators, judges, professors, government officials, and other professionals concerned with transnational arbitration of commercial and investment disputes. Its members come from more than 55 countries and 30 U.S. states, including many of the world’s leading international companies, law firms, arbitrators, and arbitration counsel.

Arato’s research and teaching interests include international economic law, public international law, international organizations, contracts, and private law theory. He has written extensively on the law of treaties and treaty interpretation, the law of international organizations, and the law of foreign direct investment. He is currently working on a long-term project on the private law dimensions of international investment law.
