Joralemon Street Co-named Black Lives Matter Boulevard

On June 29, the Brooklyn Borough Hall unveiled a new “Black Lives Matter” mural along the newly co-named “Black Lives Matter Boulevard.” The mural runs along Joralemon Street between Court Street and Boerum Place where the Law School’s main building is located.

The mural and street co-naming commemorate the Black Lives Matter movement, paying tribute to the thousands who have marched in Brooklyn and across the nation to protest police violence against Black people in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Cadman Plaza, across the street from the Law School, has been a frequent site of protests and gatherings since May.

The mural joins others painted in each of the five boroughs of the City, as announced by Mayor Bill De Blasio June 19, when he also declared Juneteenth an official City and school holiday. Inspired by a mural painted by the city government of Washington, D.C., Brooklyn joins other cities across the nation to commemorating the movement in this way.

At the street dedication event, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said: “By putting ‘Black Lives Matter’ in the oldest governmental building in Brooklyn, at the crossroads of the Supreme Court, the Criminal Court, and where people come to make noise and ensure laws are carried out, we are saying in a very clear and pronounced way that every time you drive down this street as a judge, every time you walk this block as a lawyer, every time you visit this building… you’re going to see that Black lives matter.”
