Professor Irene Ten Cate Named Editor in Chief of Legal Writing

Professor Irene Ten Cate, who is an associate professor of legal writing and a co-director of the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law, was recently named editor in chief of Legal Writing: The Journal of the Legal Writing Institute.

Ten Cate, who joined Brooklyn Law School in 2021, previously served as essay editor and assistant editor in chief for the journal. One of the leading peer-reviewed journals in the field, Legal Writing provides a forum for the publication of scholarly articles about the theory, substance, and pedagogy of legal writing.

"Legal writing is still a young academic discipline, but it has tremendous breadth and depth,” Ten Cate said. “Legal Writing has played a key role in developing the field, publishing pioneering scholarship about rhetoric and storytelling, including in judicial opinions and written and oral advocacy; legal reasoning; pedagogy; the legal academy; and the rise of generative artificial intelligence; among other subjects. I am honored and excited to lead the journal as it is approaching its 30th birthday."

Other professors at Brooklyn Law School are also actively involved in editing academic journals in the field of legal writing. Professor of Legal Writing Maria Termini, who is co-director of legal research and writing, also serves on the editorial board of Legal Writing. Assistant Professor of Legal Writing Meg Holzer is an editorial board member for another peer-reviewed publication, The Second Draft.
