As the field of sports law grows and as the sports industry itself continues to evolve, Brooklyn Law School’s Sports Law Program, led by Professor Jodi Balsam, has increasingly gained notice for its quality and impact.

Now it has been awarded a spot in Sports Litigation Alert’s “25 Best Sports Law Programs in America,” which noted the school’s strong combination of faculty leadership, including through the externship program that Balsam leads, and its ideal location.

“Brooklyn Law School’s sports law program stands out due to its strategic location in New York City, offering students unparalleled access to major sports teams, leagues, and sports representation agencies,” the article states. “Under the leadership of Professor Jodi Balsam—an esteemed expert in the field and co-author of a leading sports law casebook—the program provides significant opportunities for internships and networking. As the Director of Externship Programs, Balsam enhances these opportunities, enabling students to gain practical experience and forge valuable industry connections…. This combination of prime location, expert faculty, and robust extracurricular activities makes Brooklyn Law a compelling choice for students aspiring to careers in sports law.”

“I could not be more proud,” said Balsam, who is also faculty advisor to the Brooklyn Entertainment and Sports Law Society (BESLS) and Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment Law Blog. “The BLS Sports Law Program gathers much of its strength from the impressive performance of our students in local sports industry internships. While I take credit for cultivating those relationships, our students’ work ethic is what leads those offices to recruit from BLS every semester. It also helps that these same BLS students later land post-graduate employment in the sports industry and complete the virtuous circle by hiring from their alma mater.”

A contributor to the sports law scholarly community, Balsam serves on the editorial boards of Law360 Sports and Betting, the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, and the international sports law blog LawInSport. Frequently quoted in the media on sports law developments, she is the on-air legal analyst for NBC Sports/The Golf Channel. Before joining academia, Balsam was the National Football League's Counsel for Operations and Litigation.

In other news from the program, this year’s Sports Law Symposium, sponsored by BESLS, is titled “Global Sport: Legal Lessons from the Olympic Games,” and will be held on October 25, and feature a keynote conversation with Court of Arbitration for Sport arbitrator Jeffrey Benz, along with panels on athlete marketing rights, broadcasting and media rights, and protecting competition integrity. Registration information will be announced soon.
