A Capital Accomplishment

The U.S. Senate on Dec. 3 confirmed Sparkle L. Sooknanan ’10 to serve as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She was nominated by President Joe Biden in February. It is the latest milestone in a stunning educational and career journey that began when she left her native Trinidad and Tobago at age 16 and moved to New York to attend college. Since graduating Brooklyn Law School, Sooknanan’s many career accomplishments include serving as a law clerk for Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. Supreme Court from 2013 to 2014.

The Magical Mentorship of Professor Michael Gerber

For generations, Professor Michael Gerber has been mentoring students, and in honor of his new professorship, many of them shared stories of how he did so. One was Sean Han ’19, who was anxious about getting a summer position. Before he could even ask for the professor’s help, Gerber sensed his anxiety and made a phone call. “A week later, I had a judicial internship lined up for the summer,” Han said. “I’ve repeatedly expressed to my parents, my fiancée, and my friends that this was the pivotal moment in not just my career, but the rest of my life.”

Focusing on Housing Stability

Brooklyn Law School’s Housing Justice Clinic, which launched last spring and is led by Professor Aissatou Barry, is focused this semester on estate-planning and deed-theft initiatives that help protect low-income New Yorkers. It has been a great opportunity for students such as Ava Zhang ’27, a 1L student who had her first client experience at the estate planning clinic, where she helped a client lay the groundwork for drafting a will. “After reviewing all the materials and meeting with us, my client left feeling confident and is now well on their way to finally getting this important document,” Zhang said.

When Sari Gabay ’00 and Anne Marie Bowler ’00 first left Big Law to start their own law firm, Gabay & Bowler, it was 2006 and they were looking to practice law on their own terms.
